Lionel Bently joined 11 South Square in February 2011. Through his role as the Herchel Smith Professor of Intellectual Property Law and Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at the University of Cambridge, Lionel has gained invaluable expertise in all areas of IP Law. He has joined chambers to provide an advisory role in cases that require such a thorough understanding of the law.

As well as a member of chambers Lionel is also a Professorial Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He has also been the Yong Shook Lin Visiting Professor of Intellectual Property law at the National University of Singapore as well as the BNL Professor of European Law at Columbia University.

He is the author of several important publications including; Intellectual Property (with Brad Sherman); The Making of Modern Intellectual Property Law – The British Experience, 1760-1911 (with Brad Sherman); Between a Rock and a Hard Place: The Problems Facing Freelance Creators in the UK Media Market-Place; and Gurry on Breach of Confidence: The Law of Trade Secrets and Confidentiality.

Previously Lionel’s expertise have been used on several occasions such as; Gowers Review of Intellectual Property, by the Treasury with regards to Public Sector Information as well as being a member of the ‘Wittem Group’ – a group of European Copyright scholars working on a European Copyright Code.

As an academic, Lionel has given expert advice on UK intellectual property law to firms in Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Brazil and the United States.
