Clerking
Members of chambers’ practices are managed and supported
by our team of four experienced and friendly clerks.
Our senior clerk Ashley Carr has substantial in-depth
knowledge and understanding of members’ practices and the
workings of specialist IP, IT and Entertainment and Media law chambers.
Ashley came to Chambers in 1994 and has been senior clerk since
July 2003.
Ashley is supported by Ben Connor who joined Chambers
in July 2007 as first junior clerk, as well as Ben Firth
and Gareth Edwards who both joined chambers in
April 2004. All three picked up valuable experience before heading
to 11 South Square at established sets in Gray’s Inn, Lincoln’s
Inn and the Temple. Our administration team of Eileen Whitbread
and Michelle Carter complete our staff.
Our clerks have a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of both
Chambers and the many courts in which members practice including:
the Trade Mark registry, Patent office, Copyright tribunal, Data
protection Tribunal, Patents County Court, High Court, Court of
Appeal, European Court of Justice, European Patent office and the
House of Lords. They are able to offer advice as to the suitability,
availability and particular expertise of individual members together
with details regarding fee levels and structures. They have excellent
relations with court staff and can give assistance and information
to those who are less familiar with intellectual property matters
and procedures.
Members of Chambers are frequently instructed by both parties to
a dispute. In these instances the usual clerking responsibilities
are altered automatically and arranged so as to ensure that client
confidentiality is maintained. Our clerks have considerable experience
in establishing these “Chinese walls” and are more than
willing to discuss details of their operation, including the availability
of a separate clerking room where needed.
Further information on members of Chambers and their practices
together with details of notable cases can be obtained from the
clerks by either telephone or email.
Instructing a Barrister
Barristers
are self-employed advocates and consultants who practice together
in sets of chambers, sharing expenses but not profits. They are
not permitted to practice in partnership.
Barristers practicing at the Intellectual Property Bar can be instructed
by solicitors and patent agents in private practice and by in-house
lawyers and patent agents of companies. In many circumstances they
may be instructed direct by lawyers from overseas. For further details,
see the International Practice Rules of the Bar.
Members of Chambers also undertake arbitration and mediation work,
both as advocates and as arbitrators/mediators.
Members of Chambers accept and send documents electronically by
prior arrangement. Such arrangements are made on a document by document
basis.
